               New perspectives open new possibilities
(International Management Film Festival 2006, Pune)

The International Management Film Festival organised by the Indira group of Institutes in collaboration with Dr. R.L. Bhatia, CEO, Fun and Joy at work, was aimed at infusing life and enthusiasm in people and their organisations through a simple yet profound formula - Shift your perception to open new possibilities.

Films like how to keep your mind fit, how to enhance your creativity and how to focus your vision were screened; all focussing on one idea- it’s all about your perception. In one of the movies titled 'Everyday Creativity', Mr. Dewit Jones, celebrated National Geographic photographer shared his thoughts on how one can fall in love with the world by doing every act with passion and creativity.

The event was a fresh reminder of how we ignore our aspirations and dreams, only to be caught up in a mundane existence. The films enabled the audience to take a quick look at their own lives to see where they are going in their professional and personal lives. Also, how one can come up with new ideas and work creatively. Mr Bhatia asserted the importance of perception in one’s life. Here are some of the practical and easy to implement suggestions, as given out in the event by Mr. Bhatia:

Mind gym: Fast thinking for fast times. Just as we take care of our bodies, it is important to keep our minds fit. In these fast changing times, one needs to be mentally fit which means developing and making full use of our brains so that we can think fast and manipulate ideas rapidly, juggle complex concepts and solve problems creatively.

How to keep your mind fit?

  1. Turn on your own power to unleash the tremendous potential that lies within you. Ask yourself – What difference do I make and how am I contributing to the organisation? Start with the affirmation that you are entitled to a better life, a better job or a better house and you have all that it takes – courage, determination, competence and skills to achieve it
  2. Tune in to yourself, your own abilities, skills and knowledge and even to changes happening around you.  Try to make yourself part of the solution
  3. Work out to build up your stamina and resilience
  4. Develop an attitude of expecting the unexpected. Remember that tough times teach you how to take the blows and learn from them
  5. Be outcome oriented. See how your actions are taking you close to your goals
  6. Work with your competence, skill and attitude

Ask yourself – Does my competence fetch me at least 35 per cent premium?

Enhancing your creativity: Creativity is not something that a person is born with. It is there within each one of us. It’s all about perspectives and adding value to what you do.

  1. Look at the ordinary and ask yourself how you can add creativity to make it extraordinary
  2. Know that there’s more than one right answer
  3. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
  4. We can do a lot more with a lot less
  5. Creativity is not only about having a vision but also about technique, perseverance and caring for your work and for the people you work with

Focus your vision: To start with you must ask yourself - Do I have a vision? You must then focus your vision to achieve the best in your life.

  1. Celebrate what’s right with world. Most of the times, we concentrate on things that are wrong with the world or what has not worked out with us. By concentrating on the right and good things in life, you discover opportunities even in problems
  2. Shift from being the best in the world to being the best for the world
  3. Decide whether you want to be a part of the status quo and continue doing redundant work or divert your energy into something productive
  4. Trust your values to achieve a balance between what you do and who you are

Tactics for Innovation

One cannot deny the importance of innovation in today’s world. It is equally important to present your innovation in a way that will be easily accepted by the others. Here’s how to do it-

  1. Present your idea from the user’s point of view- how will it benefit the user
  2. Introduce big ideas in small increments
  3. Your message should be clear and compatible with the user’s needs
  4. Always rely on a credible messenger to present your idea
  5. Easy in/easy out: You must inform the user the easiest way to use your innovation and the easiest way to get out in case he decides not to use it in future
